20/11/2017 DEATH. PRACTICE AND VARIATIONS / RENATA PIOTROWSKA-AUFFERT

Sunday November 12th, 2017 / News, Program 2017

The 2017  Programme is divided into two cycles: MORZE MOŻLIWOŚCI (THE VAST SEA OF OPPORTUNITY) and OKO CYKLONU (THE EYE OF THE CYCLONE)

THE VAST SEA OF OPPORTUNITY

The shows and events presented in this particular cycle will feature various techniques and varying approach to contemporary dance. The performances in this cycle will aim to present different treatment of the modern dance techniques, premieres, young artists’ first appearances in the sphere of contemporary dance art and performance art; also included are presentations by acclaimed, well-known artists who cooperate with the younger generation, and, last but not least, performances and installation art events for children.

THE EYE OF THE CYCLONE

A Centre of stormy events. A Centre of important matters. A Centre  that can sometimes be dangerous, shocking, astounding. The performances presented in this cycle undertake vital problems in very many differing ways. The artists use improvisation, construct tension/expression by means of micro-movements, make use of performative tools, combine various dance styles and various spheres of the arts: dance/theatre/film/visual arts – they employ video materials, put up installations or act in an empty space. One special trait connects the whole of the work by our artists: it is like the eye of the cyclone – it takes up crucial  dilemmas, rough ones, sometimes ominous, intense and ultimate but very well-known to us all.

Death is an experience that cannot be related. It is a borderline which, once crossed, does not allow to return. A person who experiences it, is gone for -ever. It is with detachment and humour that Renata Piotrowska, a choreographer and performer, juxtaposes such an experience with theatre: according to the idea of Peggy Phelan who considers theatre to be the place where society “gets ready for a loss, and especially for death”.

Piotrowska, in her attempt to  present a face to face meeting with death on stage, collects various scenarios which make up a performative diptych. While it lasts, the choreographer travels through centuries of not-experiencing death and makes use of artistic, cultural and social representations of that final experience.

Starting with an observation that a contemporary body negates, more now than at any other time, its own mortality, and that omnipresent mortality in the media is accompanied by a desire to remove death from everyday life, the artist turns towards certain historical phenomena and phantasms connected with the problem of death, such as the mediaeval iconography of the danse macabre, ritual, personification of death, macabre aesthetics of gore or petite mort erotic poems. Over and over again, creating meetings with death and inviting death, an intangible partner,  to participate in choreography, Piotrowska analyses  contemporary understanding of dying, or its lack.

After the performance we invite you to a meeting with artists

The meeting will lead: Julia Hoczyk
